October is the perfect time of year to explore science.

Did you know…At an early age, all children have the capacity and propensity to observe, explore, and discover the world around them? Why not take the changing of the season as a perfect opportunity to foster your little ones understanding of science? Children need to practice the world of science to make sense of it. There are many ways parents can help facilitate their child’s investigations at home.

Explore objects, materials, and events within your community. Go on a nature walk. Attend a free fair. Visit a pumpkin patch.

Make careful observations and raise questions. Listen to and watch the fall leaves dropping from the trees and changing colors. Feel the crisp coolness in the air.

Be descriptive in your observations and record what you see. Whether it be through charts, graphs, or pictures. Perhaps you can collect and record similarities and differences of leaves.

Effective science investigations can deeply engage young children for extended periods of time, beyond a single activity or session. So get creative, explore nature, and have fun with this beautiful cool fall weather.
